Hearings in Atlanta to end abortion
Monday afternoon at 2pm in the Coverdale Legislative Building, room 406, the hearing began for HR 536 and HB1. Ed Lindsey, chairman of the House Judiciary sub-committee opened the meeting and welcomed anyone in the room to sign a clipboard sheet in order to be given an opportunity to say whatever they so desired in support or against the proposed legislation. At this point the committee members included Mike Jacobs (D), Barry Fleming (R), Mary Margaret Oliver (D), and a couple legislative aids who were clearly filling in.
Ga. Rep. Martin Scott was given the floor first with his legal counsel, David Gibbs. Martin’s speech was reminiscent of the stump speeches I’ve heard around the state in defense of the Human Life Amendment. He pointed out that in most districts of Georgia, a politician must be pro-life to win. So clearly the life issue was important to the Georgia people. Then Martin introduced his legal counsel, and Ed Lindsey directed his questions to the lawyer. I was disappointed with David Gibbs. He did not seem to have a firm grasp of Georgia law, and his answers were rather vague.
Rich Golick Republican from Cobb County, a member of the House Judiciary, and supposedly staunch supporter of life, sauntered into the meeting 15 minutes late, checked his voice mail while on the platform during the testimony, and then strode out of the room without making eye contact with anyone a couple hours early. Certainly not the voice of support for HR 536 and HB1. Maybe today he’ll pretend to be more interested.
Following Martin and David’s turn at the plate, up came 4 lawyers from Georgia colleges and universities. They proceeded to tear apart HR 536 as the most worthless piece of legislation ever drafted, and the grand finale, it was a violation to a legislator’s oath of office to even consider passed HR 536. Due to questioning from Ed Lindsey, one lawyer was good enough to admit that he was very pro-abortion, and his wife is the chairman for Planned Parenthood Georgia.
Following the blood letting, Frank Mulcahey, legal counsel to Archbishop Gregory and the Archdiocese of Atlanta, stood and stated that the Archdiocese was against HR 536 for all the reasons already so eloquently stated by the 4 lawyer panel, and if anyone wanted to bring forward a good piece of legislation to undermine Roe v. Wade, he would be happy to support it. No one mentioned HB1.
Barry Fleming, member of the Judiciary Committee was good enough to ask if not HR 536 than what bill, which no one had an answer for. Shocking. Everyone knows the wrong way while simultaneously acknowledging they have no idea what the right way is. Does anyone see a problem here?
At 4pm a 5 minute recess was called and several members of the Judiciary left including Wendell Willard.
GRTL President Dan Becker rose to speak following the break with GRTL lobbyist Mike Griffin. He gave an impassioned speech on the relation of slavery and abortion, and pointed out all the current scientific advances that have reduced humans to inventory and property. Ed Lindsey asked Dan if he would support HB1 after hearing all the problems with HR 536. Dan evaded the question three times, and then Ed Lindsey, with a chuckle that was echoed by the room asked again, “Please answer the question yes or no, Will you support HB1?” Dan said, “ In so far as the legislation seeks to undermine Roe v. Wade in the same manner as HR 536, I do not foresee that we would have any problems offering it our support.”
Catherine Davis, lobbyist for HR 536, gave a rousing speech in defense of HR 536, followed by Alveda King who pointed out the agenda against the black community in regard to Atlanta’s abortion industry. Both speeches were declared to be very good. I unfortunately had to leave at 5 after 5 with my children, and missed these speeches. I was quite dissappointed.
Today the hearing part of HR 536 will be wrapped up, and HB1 given an opportunity to offer testimony. Same building, same room number, same time: CLOB, room 406, 2pm-5pm. Hope to see you there.
