It’s pretty apparent from some of the commentary I’ve read on the Web recently that a significant number of pro-life advocates are not at all remorseful over the murder of notorious abortionist Dr. George Tiller last Sunday by a deranged gunman. Some have even suggested this act of murder was God’s justice being visited upon Tiller and his family.
I also attribute his murder to a supernatural being, but it’s Satan, not the God I serve. We who believe in the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death ought to mourn the impact Tiller’s murder has had on our efforts to win the culture to the side of life. Our job has become that much harder at a time when the nation seemed to be turning a corner and moving in our direction.
This cowardly act has galvanized the pro-abortion movement and garnered them sympathy at a time when the momentum was clearly on our side. Pro-life forces have come together to confront the most anti-life President in our nation’s history, and the hypocrisy of his call for fewer abortions while allowing the murder of unborn children to remain legal was beginning to erode the public’s acceptance of abortion as a “right.”
Polls showed a majority of Americans now consider themselves pro-life, and a favorable opinion piece in the Denver Post by a formerly sympathetic columnist ripped to shreds the arguments pro-abortion forces use to justify the unjustifiable. The tide seemed to be turning, ever so slowly but perceptibly, in our favor.
With the discharge of a handgun, however, the pro-abortion advocates snatched the blanket of victimhood from the unborn person and wrapped themselves in it, playing up the fear they now supposedly feel for their lives because of our movement’s alleged tendencies toward violence and hate.
The media is running with the right-wing hate group narrative and putting us on the defensive. It’s irrelevant how illogical it is to tar hundreds of millions of people with Scott Roeder’s bloody brush. The left owns the megaphone and they’re using it to weigh us down with this murder.
In short, Scott Roeder has given those who wish to keep legally killing babies for convenience an issue with which they can bludgeon us for years, hurting the very movement in which he so fervently believes. Note how swiftly President Obama condemned the murder of an abortionist by an extremist with ties to pro-life and Christian organizations but, as of this writing, is still silent on the murder of an American soldier in Arkansas by a convert to radical Islam. I suppose that speaks to his priorities, doesn’t it?
Yes, I mourn for the serious setback to our efforts to restore a culture of life in America. But I also mourn for the family of George Tiller who will forever carry hate and bitterness in their hearts toward all who call themselves pro-life when only one person truly deserves their wrath. I mourn for his wife, children and grandchildren who deserved to see their loved one die of natural causes, not gunned down like a hunted animal.
I mourn for those who think that murder justifies murder and that vengeance is theirs, not the Lord’s. I mourn the fact he was murdered in a church, a place of peace and a sanctuary where sinners come to find the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Most of all, as we humans scream and scratch at one another, some wishing to hang this murder around our necks, others defending the shooting on behalf of tens of thousands of murdered innocent unborn persons, and still others resisting the label of scapegoat for the despicable act of a lone madman, I mourn the presence of Satan, laughing with malevolent glee at what he has done to disrupt the good and honorable work of protecting God’s precious gift of human life.
