Long before South Africa was universally associated with Nelson Mandela, cheap international holidays and the only destination in Africa worth visiting if you don’t want to be poisoned by the tap water, its principle claim to fame was a system called apartheid.  A product of its history, apartheid entailed the minority of the population (the descendants of European settlers) ruling over the majority black population in a brutal manner that would have made Mussolini blush.  Blacks were deprived of their citizenship, forced into manual labour (if they were lucky enough to be able to move around at all) and generally preened to serve their white masters.  If they resisted, they were taken care of.  The more fortunate trouble-makers ended their days on the gallows while most of them disappeared in a series of extra-judicial executions that became more depraved and creative as the policy aged. A twisted local version of Calvinist-Christianity was used amongst the whites to justify the oppression with the preordained being identified as white.  The framework of the current status quo as regards abortion grew from that as a reaction. 

During the apartheid years (1948 to 1994), the National Party government regulated sterilisation and abortion (it seems almost nostalgic that the two be associated in anything official) in terms of an Abortion and Sterilisation Act.  Essentially, nobody could get an abortion unless they’d been raped, been the victim of incest (voluntarily or not), were likely to die as a result of the continued pregnancy, were likely to give birth to a child who was either to be deformed (conveniently undefined in terms of the statute) or otherwise ‘unviable’ - or (and this was the catch-all): be likely to suffer detriment (real or imagined) as a likelihood of the pregnancy’s continuation.  The courts were really open to whites and whites, mostly, could therefore only get legal abortions.  The wealthy flew to London or crossed the border (there was a great degree of shame attached to seeking out the procedure) and escaped the humiliation of appearing in open court but the fact remained, your chances of access to an abortion were almost guaranteed if you had the right skin colour.  Simultaneously, illegal abortions resulted in the prosecution of the perpetrators so long as the victims were white.  The government looked the other way when the murdered unborn were black.  Why after all, when whites were already outnumbered, should the authorities care if someone, for whatever reason, had removed another black person who’d require policing later?

Apartheid South Africa became democratic South Africa (much to everyone’s surprise) and having being associated with the previous government in any way bought as much respect as openly supporting the Nazis after the Allied victory in World War II.  Democratisation required the outlawing of all forms of racial discrimination.  Sexual and gender discrimination were out too.  The new order made it its primary objective to undo everything it saw as negative as a result of the old order.  If previously whites only had access to abortions, this had to change.  ASAP.  As a result the legislature began considering the Choice of Termination of Pregnancy Act almost as soon as the old racist order had been ushered out the door.  Now any woman could have a ‘termination’.  It doesn’t matter if you are only twelve years old, married, unmarried, whatever - you can request a pregnancy termination within the first twelve weeks of gestation without having to ever inform your parents (they can be charged with a criminal offence for trying to stop you) or husband.  You can get the abortion after twelve weeks too, although not as easily.

Abortion became part of something called ‘reproductive health’ and the message was that messing with this ‘right’ was tantamount to identifying oneself with the previous order.  Yes, a doctor or a midwife could refuse to carry out the procedure but they were required to tell the ‘patient’ where they would find the ‘treatment’ they sought (effectively making them accomplices).  At the time, to overcome a chronic shortage of medical professionals, doctors were being imported en masse from Cuba.  Considering the necessary ideological qualifications to get a university education under Castro, nobody had any doubt that the exports would be doing much refusing.  South Africa quickly had the most liberal abortion law in the world, not to mention the only abortion law to ever be greeted by the dancing and singing in parliament of members of the ruling party who put it onto the statute book. 

Where does that leave us?  Opponents of abortion enter the fray with a label as ‘reactionary’, ‘racist’, ‘sexist’ or all or some of the above.  Already on the back foot, they can’t make their message heard and are dismissed with contempt before they’ve even opened their mouths.  No major political party dares oppose abortion as a policy decision.  The parameters of the fight have moved on and the opponents of abortion have their energy drained in trying to justify why they should be heard instead of concentrating on what they’re trying to say.  The few successes have only been temporary and principally resulted from the legislature (naturally buoyant after it’s earlier ‘victory’) callously disregarding the process needed to amend the Act.  The shame factor has largely dissipated, as evidenced by the director of a Marie Stopes clinic appearing on radio news near the end of every school holiday period and complaining that he sees the same faces time-after-time, the new girls look younger-and-younger and he’s not supposed to be providing contraception - as opposed to another kind of ‘reproductive health’ service, I suppose.

Why is this important?  The South African example has not gone unnoticed by the “pro-choicers” in your jurisdiction.  This is the template going forward.  It works and it’s powerful.  If Amnesty International can make access to abortion a ‘political right’, opponents everywhere will find themselves branded in the unfriendly media as ‘fascists’, ‘sexists’, ‘reproductive Nazis’, ‘racists’, reactionaries’, ‘misogynists’ and whatever else.  Expect an attempt in your area soon.

What, in my opinion, can be done?  Never let the issue drop from the policy programmes of major political parties.  Never underestimate the power of single voter issues - if South African voters had this luxury, this situation might never have come about.  Never underestimate how quickly things can change.  Pray.

So we headed over to the Press Club in Your Nation’s Capital to hear each of the candidates interview for the RNC Chairman job.  Hosted by Grover Norquist at Americans for Tax Reform.

90 minutes and only one word from each of the candidates on the Life issue. 

One question.

One word.

Grover Norquist asked, “Are you Pro-Life?”

They each replied, “Yes.”

That was it.  One word on Life.  The biggest issue of our generation.  The GOP has a Pro-Life plank.  The Democrats and Obama represent the party of death.

Some 26 percent of the Jesus Followers followed Obama-Abortion.  And none of the RNC candidates talked about it.  And how to persuade Life-Lovers to vote again with the Life Party.

We needed to hear more about what the new guy would do to Fight FOCA.  And defend Life.

Dan Gilgoff at USNews & World Report though this was odd also and quoted Charmaine on Twitter, Would-Be Republican Party Chairmen Quiet on Faith at Candidate’s Forum.  Charmaine observed,

“It’s nice that all the GOP candidates said ‘yes’ they are ‘pro-life.’ But there is slightly more to it than that.”

The Republican party is the party of limited government, low taxes, strong defense, pro-life and pro-marriage.  But we heard precious little of how conservative values differ from Obama and the Party of Abortion.

Even Jeremiah Wright.

We have been safe for some 2,800 days.  Will this continue?

Vice President Elect Joe Biden has promised us that we will be attacked when Barack Obama is president.  Americans will be killed by Jihadist terrorists.

This is a campaign promise of the Obama administration.  One promise that Obama is sure to keep.

Alert Readers know that our household lives down wind in the blast zone of Your Nation’s Capital.  A dirty bomb in DC is a bit of a concern for us.

If you voted for Obama, you voted for changing the landscape in Washington, DC.

Literally.

True.

“As long as you have your health, you have everything.”

False.

Health should not be a variable in a person or a couple’s happiness.  Marriage vows remove health as an excuse.

But our base pop-culture holds that health is man’s noblest possession.  And Dr. Cohen’s conclusion, like most ‘research’ coming from the academy, is wrong.

Without an eternal perspective, modern man worships the body, and its health.  If one’s health goes then all is lost:  there is nothing worthy to worship.

Life is Good(R) only if your health is good.

If your health is not good then all promises are off and you have nothing.

No health = Nothing.

So where does that leave us when the doctor tells us our health is gone?

The best sermon Your Business Blogger(R) ever heard on health was given by David Wayne.  As only an insightful Five-Point Calvinist could reason and deliver.

Charmaine and I found Pastor Wayne on the internets.  Alert Readers know Wayne’s writing through his work at The Jolly Blogger.  We first bookmarked Jolly Blogger almost four years ago and then booked over to his church, which happened to be within Sunday commuting distance when we lived in Maryland.

His theme was that happiness is not conditional on health and indeed we do not have a ‘right to happiness’ or a ‘right to health.’

Our duty is not that our life should be of pleasure,. . .but does our life please our Creator. 

Not are we happy with life.

But is our God happy with us.

(With no God, modern men have only themselves to please.)

The Follower of Jesus has an eternal perspective beyond this celestial orb.

And one can still have all that is worth having.

If we have health. Or not.

She was one of the five million who read the book and wanted more.

Here’s what we learned about, as the 22 doggie-double Marleys gnawed their way across 15 years.

Yes, it is a dog story and no humans were hurt in the filming.  But the lessons were made for the alphas in us all.

Dogs add more than they subtract.  The shaggy dog is the origin of fuzzy math.

2) Dogs are a cost-center not a profit-center: a consumer of resources.  But the indoor animals (with outdoor voices) generate enough goodwill to be an asset that doesn’t need to be sold to be realized or appreciated.  A lot like children.

3) The domestic animals do not always produce domestic tranquility.  Until housebroken.  Just as, Charmaine would say, husbands.

4) Moms and Dads always cry after a miscarriage.  There’s one in the movie.  If you are Pro-Choice you have our permission not to look at the sonogram.  Then again, go ahead.  There was no heartbeat.  One pregnancy in five miscarries.  One woman in four has an abortion.  There is a lot of crying in America, and its not only over a dog in the Marley & Me movie.

5) Funerals are for the living.  As Yogi Berra said, “Always go to other people’s funerals, otherwise they won’t come to yours.” There must be closure for the living over the dead.  A miscarriage needs closure.  An abortion needs closure.  Too bad the Pro-Choice community insists that abortion is a private matter.  Women (and the dads) would heal quicker with some remembrance of what was.  What could have been.  Funerals provide the venue for a good cry.  Like dog movies.

Go read the book.  Go see the movie.  Take a friend. 

Even if you don’t need a reason to cry.

Nobel laureate Milton Friedman said that a cultural prerequisite of capitalism is the holding of truthfulness as a common virtue. When you can trust a merchant’s word, says Friedman, “it cut[s] down transaction costs.” Without adherence to common moral principles we must substitute external controls to govern business behavior; efficiency demands a framework of standards and accountability.

Even the 18th-century atheist philosphe, Voltaire, recognized this problem. Though he believed Christianity was an “infamy,” much like Christopher Hitchens, Voltaire wrote that “I want my attorney, my tailor, my servants, even my wife to believe in God...then I shall be robbed and cuckolded less often.”

So. If you are not a Jesus-lover, it is still good (and safer) to do business with ‘em.  Less chance of getting cheated.

The fools for Christ are easier to spot during Christmas.

Charmaine was interviewed Tuesday by Dan Gilgoff from USN&WR in Pro-Lifers Inundate Obama Website With Comments,

“The president of Americans United for Life, Charmaine Yoest, gave God & Country a heads-up that pro-lifers have inundated the Obama transition team’s website with comments opposing passage of the Freedom of Choice Act, which would codify Roe v. Wade and strike down abortion restrictions currently on the books.

When she sent the E-mail last night, Yoest says, there were fewer than 200 comments responding to a memo titled “Advancing Reproductive Rights and Health in a New Administration,” on the Obama site, change.gov. Now, there are almost 2,000 comments. Most--almost all, in fact--appear to be from abortion rights opponents.”

Dan Gilgoff researched the comments and reported that the comments of the Lifers were consistently polite.  Odd in the blogosphere.  Alert the media.

“Comments areas are notorious for their nastiness, but I’m struck by the respectful tone of these protests.



[T]he volume of comments also shows that the pro-life movement is very much engaged right now and can be quickly activated. If he removes Bush-era abortion restrictions, as expected--like banning U.S. funds from going to foreign groups that offer or promote abortion in family planning services--Obama will face a firestorm of criticism. And should he move beyond such traditionally Democratic policies to actually expand abortion rights through a law like FOCA, pro-lifers would go ballistic. They’re already watching closely.”

Since Gilgoff’s article appeared a few hours ago the pro-abortion liberals jumped into the comments section.  Bringing the usual blog snarkiness and forcing the website moderators to work over time over the Christmas holidays.  Readers are regularly now treated to,

Even though Obama has promised to sign FOCA into law as his first order of business, he might consider doing politics in Your Nation’s Capital a bit differently.  A Change.

Perhaps Obama will take note of Carol’s suggestion.  It would be good politics.  For A Change.

Tell Obama To Stop Supporting FOCA

Pro-abortion forces have given President-elect Obama 55 pages of instructions on what to do when he becomes President.  A top priority?  The “Freedom of Choice Act” (FOCA).

Some insist FOCA isn’t a real threat, that we can stop it easily.  But that’s not what pro-life leaders on Capitol Hill are saying.

Last week, I was in a meeting with Representative Mike Pence of Indiana—one of the key incoming House leaders—and he listed FOCA as one of the top four threats he sees in the next few months.

The Obama transition website has posted the 55-page pro-abortion marching order and opened it up for comment.

Let’s tell him to ignore it.

Click here to ask President-elect Obama to stop supporting FOCA.  FOCA would eliminate every abortion-related law nationwide—even common-sense laws that protect women and minors—and force us to pay for the radical pro-abortion agenda with our tax dollars.

We can do it!

As I work my way through Vonnegut, my inner cynic is rewarded with gems from 40 years ago.  For example:

Don’t try to understand it - it won’t really make any sense without the context of the rest of the book.  But - if you want a good jolt, read the book.  One thing is for certain: Vonnegut knows how to string words together in a magical way.

Brad is a hi-tech, very bright, successful entrepreneur from Colorado.  He supports abortion on demand:  Abortion anytime for any reason; we might as well, as has so often been suggested, rub them out... Liberals are not logical.

If you win against IL Gov. Rod Blagojevich, you might be on the side of the angels.

Charmaine was interviewed for CitizenLink, a division of Focus on the Family, Good News: Illinois Pharmacists Can Challenge Discriminatory Rule,

“This is a huge victory for the freedom of conscience of all health care providers,” said Dr. Charmaine Yoest, president and CEO of Americans United for Life. “Pharmacists now have proper recourse against a discriminatory law that would force them to check their constitutional rights at the workplace door.”

Back in 2005, Illinois governor Blago demanded that pharmacists must dispense drugs regardless of any conscientious objection.  If Blagojevich wanted a Zyklon B gas prescription filled, then the pharmacists would fulfill or loose their licenses.

The courts ruled against Blago.  The good-guys won.  The bad-guys lost.

Life advocates are praising the timing of new government rules that protect health care providers’ freedom of conscience.

The Department of Health and Human Services put the regulations in place last week to reinforce rules that protect doctors from being forced to participate in abortion and other anti-life practices.

“By releasing them now, they will be in the federal register for 30 days before the Obama administration takes office,” said Denise Burke, vice president and legal director for Americans United for Life. “For that reason, the Obama administration cannot simply erase these rules.”

Planned Parenthood’s Cecile Richards does not care for rights of conscience.  (Except her own conscience—don’t even think about asking her about her own abortion.) David G. Savage at LA Times writes, Health providers’ ‘conscience’ rule to take effect
The last-minute Bush administration declaration lets doctors, clinics, receptionists and others refuse to give care they find morally objectionable.

“We are shocked that the Bush administration chose to finalize its midnight regulation and to take this parting shot at women’s health and ignore patients’ rights to receive critical healthcare services and information they deserve,” said Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, in a statement. “We look forward to working with President-elect Obama and leaders in Congress to repeal this disastrous rule and expand patients’ access to full healthcare information and services, not limit it.”

Many of the abortions at Planned Parenthood are performed to rid the world of African-American babies.  This is one lucky baby girl.

At a tribute for Weyrich on Sept 10, 2008, George Will recounted a special encouragement from Paul decades ago.

George Will has a son with Down Syndrome.  When he was born, Paul called him.  “George,” said Paul, “You are so lucky.  Your son is like the angels.” George hesitated.  Every parent would think this of his newborn son.  But a child with Down Syndrome?

“He is like the angels because he will never know sin...”

Those same angels carried Weyrich home last night.

Paul Weyrich was a pioneer in the conservative movement.  He assembled and managed a talented team—he had content and was a pioneer in focusing on communicating the message.

Yes, unless we stop it.

Unfortunately the proposed legislation has friends.

The “Freedom of Choice Act” or FOCA is the proposed law that would eliminate all regulation and oversight of abortion.  No parental notification for minors. No licensed doctors doing the cutting.

So how can we be so sure FOCA might be a-coming?

Because of the relationships of Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood.

Barack Obama promised Cecile Richards that FOCA would be the first item of law that Obama would sign.

Obama will sign FOCA because it will be forced thru congress.
