A small gathering of college students gatherd around my car with cameras as I was leaving a store where they frequent. I jokingly approached them, asking what they were doing. "Taking pictures of your sign." they said. The sign read "If It's Not A Baby, You're Not pregnant." I asked the girls how they felt about abortion.

      <dc:subject></dc:subject>

“Indifferent,” was their reaction. INDIFFERENCE- THE BIG BAD WORD WHICH CAUSES SO MUCH SUFFERING! I quickly reached into my car and brought my pro-life material to their attention, showing them the picture of “Baby Malachi,” who was found in pieces after an abortion and was put back together along with other babies who were discarded by an abortion clinic and given a decent burial. The girls sad that it was sad. I gave them some insightful magazines [iCare, a publication of Human Life Alliance] full of stories of abortion and pictures depicting the life stages. I also gave them an invitation to gather for “Prayer On the Town Square” in honor of 40 Days For Life. We spoke about the reality of abortion for a few minutes. I drove away thanking God for the unexpected opportunity to share my beliefs. I have confidence that these young people who are our future will keep this small event in their memory, possibly influencing their future decisions. I am sure they will take their pictures and go back to their dorms or classrooms and discuss the issue of saving the unborn!

Had my first outing to speak face to face with a group of people about life matters yesterday over in Tampa - much better received than I expected it to be.... I couldn't pass up on an opportunity to have a friendly discussion. All in all I spoke with 7 people (first in a group setting - then one on one with a few). I was energized by it all. God is good.

http://oflusa.com

The first time I went out knocking on doors I was nervous. I wasn’t sure how the message of life would be received this way since I’d been delivering it in so many other ways for so long. A million thoughts were running through my head. Thoughts such as:

> what if they get angry at me?
> what do I say?
> do I know the message of life good enough to go out there and do this?
> how do I deal with disagreements?
> will this really make a difference?

Well, I can tell you, as soon as you knock on that first door, it’s time to focus and get ready! My first door wasn’t even a door. It was a latino woman who didn’t speak any English & was walking by. I decided to talk to her on my way to the first house, but when I realized she didn’t understand a word I was saying, I handed her one of our flyers & told her to have a nice day...which she seemed to understand.

Finally I get to the door with my partner Bruce. They are my daughter’s neighbors and I am quite certain they are not pro-life. The husband answered the door. I said hi & got right to it.

I asked “Can I talk to you about the message of life?.” Okay, so he knew me & was stunned about what was going on. He nodded & I then asked him “Did you know cloning is legal in America?”. I then explained how the federal government doesn’t allow for federal funding of the procedure, but it is funded by some states, like Missouri. I added “Yep, cloning is legal and state funded, you just aren’t allowed to be born.” They kill the cloned humans and use them for scientific research.”

I drifted into the topic of abortion and how as many as 4,000 people are killed every single day in America. One of the flyers we hand out has statistics on the black abortion rate in America. I went through some of those stats as well, such as how almost 1 in 2 babies in a black mother’s womb end in abortion, and how blacks have 4 times the number of abortions that white women have in America.

I went over a few other stats, thanked him for his time and left him with a flyer. I could have asked him what he thought and continued the conversation, but hey, I was still a little nervous & was grateful that it went so well!

The rest of the day went smoothly, and every door got easier. It’s like anything else, the first time can be a little tough, but after a while, it’s like riding a bicycle...you get better every time you get on.

Organized for Life Field Manual

Click here for a printable version of our Field Manual

This manual will provide you with a basic understanding of things you will want to know while going door-to-door as a part of the Organized for Life project. As a representative of Organized for Life, you will help deliver the message of life to every person in every home in America.

CONTENTS:
1. What OFL wants to accomplish and why it works
2. Basic Ground Rules
3. Getting prepared
4. Where do I go?
5. Door-knocking
6. Sample conversations
7. Recruitment and the Pro-Life Party

-- What OFL wants to accomplish and why it works --

We want to help spread the message of life to every door in America, and eventually, around the world! We believe we can accomplish two things by door knocking.

1) We help people understand life issues
2) When we find people who are sympathetic to the life issues, we take the opportunity to recruit them for pro-life efforts and encourage them to become involved in the movement.

So why door-knocking? Aren’t there plenty of other, less intimidating and more efficient ways to spread the pro-life message?

The answer is that face-to-face communication works

We do have wonderful materials that we hand out to people that have outstanding articles and photographs, but being right there in front of somebody is the most powerful way to deliver the life message.

-- Basic Ground Rules --

Okay, a person answered the door, now what!?

Don’t fly your colors immediately - You want to start a discussion, not get into an argument. If the person responds positively about the life message then you can relax & focus on getting that person to join our efforts.

Rule #1 – Don’t panic
Rule #2 – Don’t argue
Rule #3 – Be friendly
Rule #4 – Leave a positive message and information for them to follow-up or join us

For specific "how to" info refer to the information below and to the Pro-Life 101 Guide

-- Getting prepared --

• Check the weather – Bring an umbrella if it looks like it’s going to rain.
• Dress appropriately - Please, wear clean, decent clothes. You don’t have to wear a suit. A good way to think of this is to look in the mirror and imagine if you were at the door.
• Know your area that you are going to - Plan the area you are going to cover. Don’t go into any area you aren’t comfortable with, and if possible, bring someone along with you.
• Things to remember – Money, have plenty of gas, lock your doors when you leave your car,
• Leave early - You are more likely to catch people in their homes earlier in the day or after 5 pm when they are getting home.

-- Where do I go? --

If you want to help your local abortion mill efforts by recruiting more people to stand and pray in front of them, then go to the neighborhoods surrounding the abortion mills. Otherwise pick a neighborhood where you feel comfortable and start making your rounds.

-- Door-knocking --

Ring the doorbell at first. If nobody answers after a minute, knock a couple of times loudly. If a person doesn’t answer the door, leave a flyer and keep moving.

Go down one side of the street and back on the other. Don’t get too far away from your car.

Always be aware of your surroundings. Don't just walk around oblivious to the time of day and / or where you are.

-- Sample conversations --

What do I say? – Hi, my name is _ and I am with Organized for Life, can I have a minute of your time to discuss the message of life with you?

If they say:

Sure, maybe, I don’t know, hmm, uhh, okay, .....well, anything that isn’t no, say the following.

Did you know cloning is legal in America and is taxpayer funded in some states?

Yes – I'm impressed! Most people don’t know that this is a fact and that billions are spent to clone and kill humans in Missouri

No - It is, Missouri and other states even require taxpayer funding of this procedure. It is true that your clone isn't allowed to be born.

Do you have children?

Yes – Are you aware that most public schools teach sex education, which includes distribution of condoms and education on birth control and abortion?

In the state of __ parental notification of abortion isn’t even required, so young children can go have a dangerous medical procedure, which might kill her, performed by a doctor, yet she isn’t allowed to carry an aspirin to school without getting suspended or expelled.

No - Do you believe schools should pass out condoms and then encourage abortions when they fail?

Did you know that condoms have a 100% failure rate? They do, it's just a matter of when they fail, but they are guaranteed to fail.

From a Planned Parenthood site - "Of 100 women whose partners use condoms inconsistently or imperfectly, 15 will become pregnant in the first year of use. Consumer reports also found that "in “typical” use, the male condom fails 15 times per 100 users per year. Statistically, this becomes a 100% failure rate in less than five years." They hand these to our children for "safe sex", many of which can't even tie their own shoes!

Statistics
How many blacks, latinos & whites have abortions
How many die or are injured from abortion? Exact numbers aren’t known, but we know of many cases

Pro-Life 101

Safe, Legal and Rare - If abortions are good, why should they be rare? Also, Though a woman may be injured by an illegal abortion, every abortion is unsafe for the unborn.

Abuse

Abortion is better than growing up abused and in foster homes – Better for whom? Shouldn’t we let people decided their misery for themselves? Oprah grew up in poverty and was molested as a child, do you think she wishes she were dead?

Population

Too many people – Why should babies pay the price for population control? Would you be willing to give up your seat on the "population" boat if they asked you to do so? Why should we demand this of people who cannot speak for themselves.

The baby is a parasite – The person in the womb is a unique human being with individual DNA which will allow you to pick that person out from a mix of a million people 100 years from now.

Not a human being – Again, at the moment of conception, the person in the womb is a unique human being with individual DNA which will allow you to pick that person out from a mix of a million people 100 years from now.

Health and life of the mother – Nobody wants to be cruel or uncaring. We must look at the facts. Over 480 physicians and doctors signed a statement which said that killing a child in the womb is never necessary to save a woman’s life.

-- Finishing the day --

• Make sure you keep detailed records of where you have been and pass them on to your OFL district leader once a week.
• Do a quick write-up of your experiences and tell us about them, good and bad.

-- Recruitment and the Pro-Life Party --

Throw a pro-life party every month! Invite everyone you know. Show a movie, have pizza & sodas, have a great time & recruit people to join us!!!

-- It's a wrap! --

Remember, you are going out as a representative of Organized for Life, so everything you say and do reflects on all of us nationwide. So do you best, be your best, and help people understand life issues and how they need to be involved, one door at a time.

Thank you,

The Organized for Life Team

There was nobody home at the first door, so we left some information at the door and continued on to the 2nd house. A hispanic woman answered and wasn’t really interested in talking, but we encouraged her to take some information, which she did. I knew who the people were at the fourth house. I was fairly certain they were “pro-choice”, or as we say in the movement, pro-death or pro-abortion. I gathered up my courage and knocked on the door. “John” answered the door and we said our greetings. Then I told him that we were making the rounds as members of Organized for Life and were bringing the message of life to the homes. John was very kind and listened to what I had to say. I asked him if he knew that cloning was legal in America, to which he responded “No”. I then explained that in Missouri they passed a clone and kill bill 2 years ago which allows them to manufacture people en masse only to slaughter them before they can be born, only to use them for research.

John listened to what I had to say, yes, he was being kind, but I know he really learned something in those few minutes. In the end, we left him some information and moved on to the next house. It went easier than I thought.

In my general neighborhood, I spoke to people I knew, and they didn’t even know about abortion, cloning and embyonic stem cell research. Not one person knew that cloning was legal in America, and in general, I believe citizens of America have little or no understanding of embryonic stem cell research, chimaeras, the mass killing of babies through in vitro fertilization nor many other topics.

1. Bring the Gospel of Life and crisis pregnancy outreach door to door, family to family, and person to person
2. Distribute pro-life literature and DVDs to every house in a neighborhood
3. Identify and establish relationships with those sympathetic to the unborn
4. Introduce pro-lifers to community efforts to end abortion
5. Organize a strong local pro-life voting block among members of all political parties
6. Dispel the myths put forth by the media and Planned Parenthood
7. Challenge people to think about what they mean by abortion and choice
8. Organize local opposition to Planned Parenthood and other abortion clinics
9. Letting the politicians know that there is a critical mass out here of people who care about unborn babies

Across the nation, there are many pro-life leaders who fill the role of community organizer, but there are far too few of them. Just imagine if in communities across the nation we had organizers with the caliber of Joe Scheidler, Chris Slattery, Jill Stanek, and Fr. Frank Pavone - the industry would surely be on its deathbed.

But the reality is that we don’t have an army of door-knockers who can help organize local efforts day in and day out. Why? Because many of those who yearn to be full-time organizers have familial and financial obligations. If we want them to work full time in spreading the Gospel of Life and organizing local opposition to child killing, we have to make sure they can can pay the rent and feed their families.

Pro-life doorknocking is the natural evolution of the effort to stop legalized abortion, and it is probably one of the most effective - and relatively untapped - ways of spreading the Gospel of Life around the local community.

If the movement wants to ratchet up the effort to defend life and hasten the end to legalized abortion, then daily pro-life door knocking is a must.

      <dc:subject>News</dc:subject>

Not long ago, my friend and I grabbed some pamphlets and walked to a nearby neighborhood where we knew nobody, braced ourselves for the worst, and hoped for the best. Our goals were to first to educate and second to mobilize. The Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) is a pressing piece of legislation that removes any and all restrictions on abortion. Even people who consider themselves fervently pro-choice start to look a bit queasy upon hearing that viable babies can be aborted and that they have to pay for abortions. Even people who consider themselves pro-choice get pretty uncomfortable when they learn that conscience rights that protect the choices of objecting medical personnel and facilities are about to disappear if people don’t act. We wanted to share this information with the public (educate!) and then ask them to sign petitions protesting the passage of FOCA and the rescission of conscience rights (mobilize!).

We were successful in our efforts and it felt amazing. The thing about knocking on doors is that it gets significantly easier each time and the person doing it gets a lot better at it. Just like anything, practice makes perfect. My first time out, I had a 33% signature rate. That’s certainly not bad, but I so desperately wanted to do better. The lives of unborn babies hung in the balance so I figured I needed to get a least a passing grade. This last outing, we knocked on 40 doors, spoke to at least 20 people, and got signatures from most of the people we talked to. Not bad for a day’s work!

The most amazing part of canvassing was watching people change right in front of us. We knocked on the door of a man who was just visiting his family and was sort of hostile when we approached. We were friendly and tried to talk, but he wasn’t quite ready to listen. We kindly understood, but we made sure he took literature from us before we left. We walked away and happened to turn back as we approached the next door. The man we had just spoken with was sitting on his stoop, reading pro-life literature, and nodding along with the points made in it. In that moment, I remembered why I had gone out and knocked on doors that day. We watched a mind change.

We kept going on and knocked on the door of a new mother holding the most beautiful little girl in her arms. We explained what FOCA is and we watched someone who admitted she was pro-choice happily sign a petition when she looked at her little girl and thought about losing her parental rights if her daughter experienced a crisis pregnancy one day. We brought LIFE to her in a way that made it real and it affected her.

Knowing that differences can be made, it’s incredible. Take the plunge, rip off the band-aid, and walk around your neighborhood too so that the message of life can be shared throughout the country and the world. Click here to contact us and to get involved and make a difference. I’m glad I did and I know the approximately 4,000 children that die everyday in this country alone from legal abortion are glad too. After all, don’t they deserve to have us fight for their lives?
