Ephesians 1:8 Thought/Prayer: Lavishly Slathered. Topics: 2 at end.
“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace which he lavished upon us.” RSV Read this scripture and more at http://prayerpivot.com)
When I think of the word “lavished,” I often also think of the word “slathered.” To me they have something in common, that being something of large amount. I may slather on sun screen at the beach; perhaps men slather on shaving cream in the morning.
Perhaps the words both contain something of the meaning of “without borders” or without restrictions. I can lavish love and attention on someone – not caring how I appear in the process – not paying attention to the amount I’m giving out. Similarly, can I not slather love also on someone? Just keep piling it up without any thought of how much?
Now I’m remembering how the woman (Mark 14) at Bethany who poured expensive ointment on Jesus’ head. Some felt that she was wasting it – that she spent too much when the money could have been given to the poor. She lavished love on Jesus by pouring on the ointment. Jesus defended her for this beautiful act.
Babies are great recipients of love-slathered on. They, just because of what they are (tiny, new creation of God), how they are (helpless and adorable), and who they are (ours or a friend’s or a loved one’s) – we get goofy and talk iddy-biddy and slather on the attention, that they so readily soak up.
The idea for today is that we lavish our love on The Creator, that we slather our affections through prayer and praise, on Him – the Only One truly worthy of never-maxed-out attention. Lord, we hope to cover Your Name with lavish love, slathered on, just as you love the babies you create every day in this world. Lord, let every baby be so loved.
• Topics: Pray to love God with great praise for all the love he lavishes upon us – Pray especially that He will reveal this lavish love to women in crisis pregnancies.
