I Samuel 17:4-7 (Pt. 2) Goliath-Type Government. Topics: 2 at end.
“And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass. And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders. Sometimes government can seem like a Goliath. It seems to get stronger and stronger in one direction of application and seems to leave out other applications of law we might deem better for the electorate. We storm and fume and ask God why this has to be the way it is. We don’t understand – we don’t like it!
However, from the beginning, our government was established on both the principles of ruling set down in the Bible and the rule of the people (as clearly shown in the Bible). When government doesn’t seem to go “our way,” we must resist the temptation to rant, rave and cave in on ourselves with doubt. We have to be pro-active, not reactive.
Easily done? No. It isn’t easily accomplished, this outlook of bettering our government via our own attitude. Sometimes it seems easier to rave on – doomsday predictions are almost fun sometimes – predicting such a future twists in our attitude and makes us think we’re actually doing something – but we’re cemented to the floor as we spout off flubber (flubbing up while in a tizzy), tossing around paint balls of bad will.
So how do we take on a Goliath of government? With smooth stones. David picked up five although he only needed the first one. For us, maybe these stones are the Word of God, prayer, humility, confidence in Him, and courage to tout a brighter view because of Him. These stones of victory can reach their mark with the accuracy of David. He was prepared for such a battle, and down came the giant. No, we don’t desire the complete bringing down of government. But we can bring about God’s will in government by being faithful with these stones, smoothed with the friction of faith in action.
