How is it that leaders, those in authority in any nation, can lead lives of godliness and honesty? And why is it that when one may think about government, there can be this little urge in our stomach that feels negative? It seems that those in leadership often are characterized as either advantage-takers or less than forthright and honest.
But then there are those we know who may fall into the category of “statesmen.†Beyond politics, there have been over time in any nation men and women who have proven themselves “above†a lot of the earthly bickering and maneuvering and have staunchly stood for what is best for the nation. But how do we get more of these into office?
Pray them in. And pray out the lesser. God answers prayer for nations we know – he did it so many times for Israel; he still is in that business today. But we must ask him to help. Asking lets him know our hearts, and he can then better answer. And when we pray figuratively into office godliness and honesty, then government gets better, and a side effect of this is that the vulnerable will be championed in a much greater way. A truly godly individual will be honest and will assess the value of human life correctly and will lead down the paths to honor this life. If we don’t pray, then we limit the possibilities for great leadership among us.
Lord, help us to pray for those in office as well as those who run for office. We ask for Your choices to become the leaders of today and tomorrow; we ask that you guide us in our decisions in this very important area of our lives. And we thank you for the godliness that can dwell in seats of power, anywhere.
