Isaiah 41:14-16 (Pt. 3) Thought/Prayer: Blown Like Chaff. Topics: 2 at end.
“Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel; I will help thee, saith the LORD, and thy redeemer, the Holy One of Israel. Behold, I will make thee a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth: thou shalt thresh the mountains, and beat them small, and shalt make the hills as chaff. What is chaff? As the granddaughter of a sharecropper farmer, I know. It’s what’s left after threshing the grain to retain only the seed. It’s the husk, the dry stuff that encased the seed, such as in wheat. And it’s fly-away. It’s lightweight, and it goes everywhere and sometimes makes the air seemed choked with it. One tries not to breathe it in.
So in this scripture, God is going to make hills be the stuff of chaff. Pretty remarkable. He’s going to just make them into the dust-like husk of grain; and then He will fan them, and they will be blown about wherever the wind carries these hills, now chaff. He’s threshing the mountains. Perhaps some of the hills referred to here are the foothills of mountains, those lower, slow-rising approaches to a mountain range. Eventually, both mountains and hills have disappeared.
Our mountains of resistance or our mountains of troubles can be earmarked by God for this same treatment. He knows what we face; he knows our hills and mountains: he has allowed us to have them. He will help us thresh them into blow-away chaff. The mountain of abortion is being threshed. It will go the way of chaff.
Lord, help us to realize that You are the one who threshes out everything. You thresh the grain; you make the wind blow on the chaff. It’s You, Lord, dealing with our mountains. Please help us never to forget the plans you have for our mountains. They blow away before You.
