Jeremiah 17:7–8 Thought/Prayer: Different Shades of Green. Topics: 2 at end.
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD
And whose trust is the LORD. For he will be like a tree planted by the water,
That extends its roots by a stream And will not fear when the heat comes; But its leaves will be green,
And it will not be anxious in a year of drought
Nor cease to yield fruit.” (NASB®) http://www.lockman.org. http://www.bible.com (Read this scripture and more at http://prayerpivot.com).
Let’s apply this scripture in a practical manner to the people at a relative’s senior nursing center. A lot of green grows here. The residents are as green as they can be, as they are able. Some are a paler shade of green – they may be perennially silent or can’t walk, but still there they are, listening to music, singing along if they can, trying to pay attention to whatever activity there is even when weakening or rigid muscles don’t allow full participation.
Others shine out a little brighter green, and they visit with one another, participate more in any function going on, and they may look out for one another and bring attention to someone who might need assistance.
Others are extremely green, being able to fully participate in music, exercise, discussions and more. These older folks keep their calendar and daily schedules, plan ahead for special times, and generally show few signs of slowing down; some of these people are probably not living on their own because of medical conditions not readily observed by a visitor or fellow resident.
But in truth, perhaps my relative is the best example of greenness in old age. She is not one who can fully participate; she is not one who looks out after others; she is not one who can keep a calendar or make notes about her schedule. She can no longer do that. But she is green. Vivid green.
Her color green is within. All of her life she has served the Lord and sought His will. She was faithful at church, with friends, and in the community, standing for God and for faith. She pondered spiritual and scriptural principles, sometimes asking for what I would think about an issue. She was teachable.
No, her leaves, as in the scripture, are not obviously “green.” But sometimes her presence is known by her dry wit and her candid Arkansas observations. Various employees enjoy teasing her, and she rallies to their comments. She is always patient and never complains. She still enjoys a good, deep chuckle. And although she may sleep when a scripture is being read to her, we know that she believes every word spoken because she used to know it.
Lord, we pray that people in nursing centers may be considered to be “green” in their lives, whatever their situation, and we pray particularly that they will be allowed always to live out their lives to the last micro-second planned for them by God. Help us to respect their lives and to lobby for their right to live, whatever the number of days and hours.
Topics: Pray for seniors and others in nursing homes to be counted as important and worthy of living.
