What are some ways we can help families stressed out by an unplanned pregnancy? What about the families that give their new baby a bed and a blanket and lots of love because abortion was not on the agenda? They can still be very stressed!
Of course they need a lot of emotional support, or even moral support if a decision to birth an unplanned child goes against all the family’s recommendations. And there are so many ways to offer emotional support through a caring approach involving other ways to help.
Perhaps there are pro-life groups that make it part of their agenda to have funds ready for families for practical necessities, particularly items for newborn babies and older infants or siblings in the family. Just the gifting of a little cuddly sleeper for baby can mean a lot to a new mom with so much on her mind and so little in the budget.
Even a gift of some books for children in the family can say “I’m thinking about you and your little ones,” really well. Often families in these crises do not have money for books, and books are a good beginning point for a foundation of life-long reading.
There are more personal ways of supporting families. If giving cash is not thought the best way to help, there are food gift certificates. Or an arrangement with a store that carries low-cost baby items might allow a mom (or dad) to go shopping for free and pick out some sweet girlie or sporty guy outfits. Even use-‘em-again shops might be willing to make an arrangement for a certain amount to be spent on baby items.
Formula! Formula and infant baby food are always needed. Maybe someone in your Bible study would like to drop by the home with a week’s supply.
We all know that there are hundreds of ways to assist families with newborns; and it may be even more important to offer support for those who struggled with LIFE vs. abortion. Lord, just help us, we pray, to not forget them. Help us to open our eyes to the needs and then perhaps to pick up the phone and call a pregnancy center or a church to offer help. Help us to see.
