“What man is he that feareth the LORD? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose. His soul shall dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the earth. The secret of the LORD is with them that fear him; and he will show them his covenant. The secret of the Lord catches one’s eye here. Sometimes in life, secrets can be fun, such as little girls sending pretend secret notes to one another. Another fun secret may come into play at a birthday time, especially if it is one of those big ones that end in digits 0 or 5. Here it is obvious to see that any secret of the Lord is weighty and important, not for any fun occasion.
So what could this secret of the Lord be?
Here is one thought, as worded in The Webster Bible (WBT). Romans 16:25: “Now to him that is able to establish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which hath been kept secret since the world began, . . . â€
There is some type of mystery in God that comes through the preaching of Jesus Christ. Of course, we don’t understand it because it is a “God-thing,†and this scripture tells us that it has been kept secret since the beginning of the world. And, the preaching of Jesus Christ is “according to†this mystery. There must be such depth here in this mystery that we should revel in awe over it.
So, to get back to our original scripture passage, and if we may sort of put these two passages together, the secret mentioned in Ps. 25 . . . this secret which has been kept secret . . . is with us who fear God. Should we fear God? If we are saved individuals through Jesus’ blood, no, in one huge sense – we do not need to fear his punishment. But there is a fear that is holy and stands someone in awe. This we always must appreciate because our God is big, and we can’t understand Him, and this is a fearsome (awe-inspiring) thing. Just consider the power it took just to create the star known as our sun: The slimmest thought of this power should make us tremble with awe and respect.
Lord, thank you for the power you poured out into the universe. We appreciate it (as much as we can in our terribly limited human way). And thank you for the power that is in the mystery regarding Christ and the preaching of Him. We praise You that we can be thought of in respect to this secret, this mystery. Help us to pass on the awe for You that stems from just these kinds of scriptural words; and help those facing LIFE crises to see that the God we serve is worthy in mysteries and in power.
