In the Footsteps of Josef Mengele

On Monday, March 9th, Barack Obama revoked his predecessor’s executive order prohibiting federal funding of lethal human experimentation. Two years ago, when Gov. Kathleen Sebelius sought to establish a human cloning and harvesting industry in Kansas (with taxpayers’ hard-earned money, no less), I penned the following in newspapers:
“This proposed slaughter should be familiar to anyone with a knowledge of history. What Sebelius, complicit legislators and the coalition [of researchers and industrialists] want to do is exactly what Hitler, the Nazis and the doctors of Auschwitz did: kill defenseless human beings in pursuit of dubious science. But unlike citizens of Nazi Germany, we live in a democracy. Men of good will have a chance to preempt this new holocaust.”
Sebelius’ efforts never bore their macabre fruit, thanks largely to the outrage of the state’s pro-life community. But as Obama’s new secretary of Health and Human Services, she’ll throw the vast resources of the federal government into this—the most appalling offense ever thrown in the face of God—on a national scale.
On Wednesday, I will attend a Rosary for a very remarkable woman named Adelheid Krescentia Kuchar, a fellow Secular Franciscan who just passed to her eternal reward. I did not know Adele well; in fact, I spent only a few minutes in her company, at a Franciscan fraternity meeting last fall. She sat down next to me and began, “You know, America is becoming more and more like the Germany of my youth.”
Adele passed away just one day before Barack Obama took the United States yet another step down the grim road of self-destruction that she was forced to endure under Nazi rule. It’s as if our merciful Lord wished to spare Adele the sorrow of reliving what author William Shirer called Germany’s “nightmare years.”
