The Battle in Texas

Texas stands out naturally in America, being the biggest state in the continental U.S.  But recently, it has been standing out even more due to a big political battle soon to be ending: the gubernatorial primary race to see who will be the Republican nominee for governor, and it has been heated!  Every so often, the Dallas Morning News publishes a “fact check” on what Rick Perry (current governor) and Kay Bailey Hutchison (U.S. Senator) are saying.  There has been name-calling and incessant ads against one another.  Perry supporters throw slams against Hutchison, saying that she has too much of the Beltway mindset and will bring big government to Texas.  Hutchison supporters say that Perry has been in office too long and is just not making progress as he should.

Perhaps Perry has made promises on which he hasn’t delivered, and one can’t blame him for not being perfect!  However, at least in one area, the facts can definitely speak for themselves: pro-life issues.  Just the pro-life endorsements of Perry speak volumes:

Texas Right to Life
Texas Alliance for Life
Texans for Life Coalition President Kyleen Wright
Concerned Women for America State Director Ann Hettinger
Heidi Group Founder Carol Everett
Eagle Forum Founder Phyllis Schlafly
Family Research Council Action PAC Chairman Tony Perkins
And don’t forget the former Alaska Governor, Sarah Palin!

In short, all of the major Texas pro-life organizations have endorsed Perry, as well as other prominent pro-lifers across the nation.  Upon examining Hutchison’s website, http://www.texans.forkay.com, I saw no pro-life organizations or prominent pro-life individuals endorsing her.  Texas Right to Life sent an e-mail in November stating Hutchison’s pro-choice stances, including that “first-trimester abortions are acceptable and need to remain legal,” seeking funding for embryonic stem cell research, and opposing the confirmation of a pro-life federal judge, Leon Holmes.  She has a 94% rating from National Right to Life and has said, “My position is I think there can be an ability for a woman, until viability, to make a choice.”

The choice is clear for pro-life, truly conservative Texans.  Some people may think we need a “fresh face” in the governor’s mansion.  But do we really want a governor who says that she is “pro-life” but who has made anti-life decisions?  Rick Perry is very outspoken about his pro-life values.  Kay Bailey Hutchison says nothing about pro-life issues on her Texans for Kay website.  Perry has signed more pro-life legislation than any other Texas governor.  He opposes the Roe v. Wade decision.  He supported the Texas Choose Life license plate legislation in 2008.  And the list could go on and on.

In addition to his stances, he is able to put his core beliefs into words that inspire.  At the 2009 Values Voters Summit, he said this: “People of faith must not be lulled into complacency, brow-beaten into silence, frustrated into inaction.  Instead, we must heed the calling of our faith to change the face of our state and nation as we risk speaking the truth, defending the defenseless, and standing fast on our values.  We can never forget that it’s not about us: it’s about the God who made us.  We owe it to ourselves, our children and our nation to continue exercising our First Amendment rights, shining the bright truth on our leaders, and so that they will know the truth, and the truth will set them free.”  http://www.rickperry.org
