Several Bible translations say “Every good gift and every perfect gift†instead of “Every good giving, and every perfect gift†as in this scripture passage. They mean the same, but it is sometimes refreshing to see words combined a bit differently than in more standard ways.
This “every good giving†has a “certain ring to it,” as we often comment. What we exactly mean by this ring may be challenging to express (yes, perhaps!) but maybe it fits in with the message of ringing bells or how words are captured as sound in our ears. And amazingly, we all know what we mean! (Interesting how we humans seem to come to agreement on some unspoken things. This unspoken agreement just happens to be about something that can be spoken! With a ring!)
“Every good giving.†These givings are from God. He always gives “good.†Even if something seems bad to us, we know that He has a broader plan to turn it into good, or keep things good (Romans 8:28).
Babies are one good-giving we know. Just the best. Just the most miraculous. Yes, we know . . . can even see . . . how they grow in the womb; but there has never been a person on earth who orchestrated that growth from the outside. No, it’s all an inside job by God, so to speak. Given all of the necessary parts, there is no person on Earth who can be in a womb and make the growth happen. It’s only God!
So the good-giving of a baby should be honored, honored by all. This gift who’s growing in mother’s pre-birth home, the womb, is at the apex of all our God can do. He helps us reproduce ourselves. He helps mother elephants and mother hamsters reproduce themselves. And we don’t really know how He does it.
He does it with the gift of life. Lord, help us to guard it. Help us to stand for these reproductions that bring additional generations, whether it is in whales or bunny rabbits, or us. We ask You to give us the strength and vision to carry on for You this every good-giving, each and every one.
